Whether you’re considering getting hair extensions for the first time or you’ve been wearing them for years, you might be wondering if it’s possible to dye extensions, and whether it is safe…

Unfortunately, the answer isn’t a simple yes or no. While high-quality human hair extensions can be coloured, artificial hair extensions can’t – traditional hair dye simply won’t penetrate the synthetic strands.

How well your hair extensions take colour will depend on the quality of the extensions – Remy (cuticle-intact) hair tends to respond best, particularly if the hair has never been chemically processed.

At The Hair Alchemist, we only work with high-quality, cuticle-intact Remy and Virgin Russian hair, which responds beautifully to colour, especially when coloured professionally. Check out our price list to see what we offer or get in touch for a bespoke quote.

By the end of this blog, you’ll have all the knowledge you need to know if and how you can safely dye hair extensions.

Can You Colour Hair Extensions?

The short answer – yes, you absolutely can colour hair extensions, but only if they’re made from real human hair.

Your exact results will depend on the quality of your human hair extensions. High-quality Remy hair extensions will give the best colour results. Remy hair is sourced so that all the hair cuticles are intact and aligned in the same direction. This not only provides you with stunning, natural-looking hair, but the cuticle also protects the hair’s inner structure, allowing colour to penetrate evenly and reducing the likelihood of dry or damaged hair

Non-Remy or low-quality extensions can give you unpredictable results, even if they’re made from real human hair! These extensions often have the cuticle stripped or coated in silicone to mimic natural shine. Once this silicone coating washes away, the hair can become too porous, leading to colour fading too quickly or to a patchy appearance when applied. With high-quality Remy hair, you get a smoother surface, consistent porosity, and a far more even, vibrant result.

It’s one of the main reasons we only work with luxury Remy hair at The Hair Alchemist – it simply delivers the most beautiful and reliable colour finish. We specialise in both Russian and Virgin Russian hair extensions, providing our clients with some of the highest-quality human hair extensions in the UK!

If you’ve purchased pre-coloured human hair extensions, it’s important to note that you should not colour these to a lighter shade – only tone or darken them. Pre-coloured extensions have already experienced a level of chemical stress, and putting them under more stress by attempting to lift the existing colour can cause:

  • Breakage and snapping
  • Dryness
  • Roughness
  • Patchy or uneven colour

At The Hair Alchemist, we also offer a Custom Colour Blending Service for seamless, natural-looking extensions. Our team expertly matches the colour, texture and thickness of your hair to ensure your new hair extensions look undetectable, without needing to colour them!

It’s not recommended to bleach hair extensions, even if they’re made from high-quality human hair. Bleaching is harsh and can lead to irreversible damage. According to WebMD, the bleaching process causes between 15% to 20% of the hair’s protein bands to break, leaving your human hair extensions dry, brittle and prone to breakage.

Bleaching can also cause damage to your natural hair, but hair extensions are even more vulnerable to damage from bleach. Hair extensions don’t receive natural oils from the scalp, meaning bleach will easily strip them of moisture and severely weaken the hair strands. Some human hair extensions, typically lower-quality ones, have already been chemically processed, making them even less resilient to colouring or bleaching.

If you are looking to bleach your hair extensions, it’s important to only attempt this with virgin hair extensions and with the assistance of a professional colourist. “Virgin” means the hair has never been chemically processed, so it still has its cuticle intact and its natural strength. This makes it far more capable of withstanding lightening than pre-coloured or lower-quality hair.

“Remember, always bleach off-head, and follow with a deep conditioning treatment to restore moisture.”

We offer high-quality virgin Russian hair extensions at the Hair Alchemist and can work with you to get the exact colour you desire!

Can You Dye Artificial Hair Extensions?

Both synthetic and artificial hair extensions are made from plastic-based fibres, such as Kanekalon or Toyokalon, which means they can’t be dyed using traditional methods.

These hair extensions are much cheaper than human hair extensions, but they can’t be heat-styled or dyed, and they tend to tangle, frizz and degrade quickly. Plus, they look less natural, especially under light – not ideal if you want a seamless match between your hair extensions and your natural hair! There have also been reports of synthetic hair containing known or probable carcinogenic chemicals, for example, this February 2025 investigation by Consumer Reports.

Chemical dyes won’t penetrate synthetic fibres, and attempting to bleach or colour them can actually melt or damage the hair entirely. The only safe option is to use specialised synthetic hair dyes or colour sprays, but results are often unpredictable and rarely match the vibrancy or longevity of human hair.

For a flawless, luxurious look, we always recommend choosing the colour you want from the start, or opting for high-quality human hair extensions that can be safely coloured by the expert Hair Alchemist team.

How to Dye Hair Extensions

When it comes to dyeing hair extensions, you need to ensure that your extensions are made from the right kind of hair. At The Hair Alchemist, we only recommend colouring 100% human Remy hair, as it behaves just like natural hair and takes colour beautifully.

Working with a professional colourist is the best way to ensure you get the best results and don’t damage your extensions. Get in touch with our team today to book your free consultation appointment and talk to us more about colouring your extensions.

However, if you’re attempting DIY, here are the steps you need to follow.

“Colour hair extensions off-head – it’s safer, more controlled and helps ensure the longevity of your extensions.”

Step 1: Choose the Right Hair

Only use 100% human Remy hair extensions – pre-coloured or synthetic hair will not dye well. Virgin or unprocessed hair works best for achieving vibrant results.

Step 2: Prepare Your Workspace

Lay out extensions on a flat, clean, non-porous surface or a mannequin head. Wear gloves, keep towels handy, and cover surfaces to prevent staining.

Step 3: Perform a Strand Test

Apply your chosen dye to a small section of hair first. This ensures the hair reacts well, and you achieve the desired shade before committing to the full length.

Step 4: Mix Your Colour

Use a professional-grade dye suitable for human hair. Avoid high-volume bleach unless absolutely necessary – it can dry out and damage even high-quality human hair extensions.

Step 5: Apply Colour Evenly

Work from root to tip, making sure every strand is coated. Use a colour brush or comb to distribute evenly and prevent patchiness. Avoid saturating the bonds or rings to protect attachment points.

Step 6: Process the Colour

Leave the dye on for the duration specified by the manufacturer. Keep extensions flat and undisturbed to prevent tangling.

Step 7: Rinse Carefully

Rinse with lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Do not rub or twist the hair; gently run fingers through to remove excess dye.

Step 8: Condition and Nourish

Apply a deep conditioner or hair mask (ensure it’s sulphate-free) to restore moisture and shine. Leave it on for 5–10 minutes, then rinse gently.

Step 9: Dry Naturally

Pat dry with a soft towel; avoid wringing or heat styling immediately. Let the hair extensions air-dry completely before installation to maintain their strength and silkiness.

Step 10: Blend With Your Natural Hair

Once installed, style gently to blend extensions seamlessly. Use sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners to protect colour and maintain softness.

Dyeing Hair Extensions FAQs

What Type of Extensions Take Colour Best?

Extensions made from cuticle-intact, high-quality Remy hair, particularly European or Russian hair, take colour most beautifully. Most types of hair extensions can be coloured, but at the Hair Alchemist, we always recommend a damage-free installation method, such as micro rings or miniature micro rings

The most crucial part is that the hair’s cuticles are intact and aligned – this ensures even colour penetration, silky texture and minimal damage. Lower-quality or coated hair simply won’t respond as predictably. At the Hair Alchemist, all our extensions are made from high-quality Remy European, Slavic or Russian hair, so you won’t have to worry about poor results if you need to colour them! Get in touch with our team to learn more about our hair extension range.

Should You Colour Extensions Before or After Installation?

For the healthiest, most controlled results, it’s always best to colour extensions before installation. Dyeing them while installed risks staining the attachment method, e.g the micro rings, and can make blending with your natural hair trickier. Pre-colouring also allows you to work carefully off-head, ensuring vibrant, even results and maximum hair longevity.

Does Colouring Hair Extensions Affect Their Lifespan?

Yes – colouring adds chemical stress, so extensions may become slightly more fragile or dry over time. With high-quality Remy hair, however, this effect is minimal when done correctly and with proper aftercare. Deep conditioning, gentle washing, and limited heat can keep your extensions silky, soft, and vibrant for much longer, even if they’ve been coloured!

Can I Colour My Hair Extensions Myself?

You can colour human Remy hair extensions at home, but it requires care, precision and the right products. Always dye off-head, do a strand test first, and avoid high-volume bleach or harsh chemicals. For the best results and to protect your investment, it’s best to book an appointment with a professional colourist who’s experienced with hair extensions, such as the Hair Alchemist.

Can You Tone Hair Extensions?

Absolutely, toning is a safer way to refresh or adjust colour without over-processing. Use a gentle demi-permanent toner or purple shampoo on blonde or highlighted extensions to neutralise unwanted brassy or yellow tones. Always follow with a nourishing conditioner to keep the hair smooth, soft, and lustrous. Check out our aftercare guidance for more advice on keeping your extensions looking their very best.
