Are you dreaming about long, luxurious hair on your wedding day? If so, you might have considered getting hair extensions to make it possible. But, with the wide variety of options available, how can you know what to choose? Or when to get them fitted? In this blog, we take you through everything you need to know about wearing extensions on your big day. But first, let’s find out how long before your wedding you should get extensions fitted…
We recommend getting your hair extensions fitted a few weeks before your wedding day. This is so that you can get used to wearing them and how to look after them before your big day rolls around. If you’re not completely happy with them, it also gives you plenty of time to make some changes.

Should I Get Extensions for my Wedding?
Hair extensions can be a great option on your wedding day to ensure that you can have the hairstyle of your dreams. Not only do they add length that you might need for your chosen hairstyle, but they also add volume and thickness to your hair, making everything look a little more luxurious.
Of course, not all brides want or need hair extensions but they are a great way to get your dream look on your big day, without the long-term maintenance. Decide what look you want to go for, and then think about whether or not you can achieve that with your natural hair.
When Should You Get Extensions Before Your Wedding?
We recommend getting your extensions fitted a few weeks before your wedding so that you can get used to how they feel and how to look after them before your big day.
Note that some types of extensions (e.g. micro rings) are semi-permanent and you won’t need to remove and reattach them each day, unlike clip-ins. This timeframe is more suited for micro rings and mini micro rings, but it can also be a good idea to have an early fitting for clip-ins so that there’s time for any changes if necessary.
What Hair Extensions are Best for Wedding Hair?
So, you’ve decided that you want hair extensions for your wedding, but which type is best? First things first, we strongly recommend using high-quality human hair over synthetic hair as it is more lightweight, glossier and offers a more natural look.
At The Hair Alchemist, we only use high-quality Russian and Slavic hair, known to be some of the best and healthiest hair in the world. It is available in a variety of colours and textures, helping to give a seamless finish. Why settle for less on your big day?
Micro Rings
Micro rings are the least damaging type of extensions available and also happen to be the most discreet. Even when wearing your hair up, they’re virtually undetectable. What’s more, they are semi-permanent, meaning that you don’t have to spend ages on your wedding night taking them out!

Mini Micro Rings
Similar to micro rings, mini micro rings are their little sister, ideal for finer hair. Just as discreet and virtually damage-free, they are a great option for wedding hair as they allow for chic styles on fine hair.
Clip-Ins
If you’re looking for a less-permanent option, clip-ins are ideal. Add volume, length and luxury without the commitment of other types of extensions. They aren’t necessarily the best option for an intricate updo as they’re more visible than other options, but they are great for achieving long, thick flowing lengths.
How Long Do Hair Extensions Look Good For?
How long hair extensions look good for depends on three key factors:
- The type of extensions you have
- The quality of your extensions
- How well you look after your extensions.
For example, our high-quality clip-in extensions will last for around two years or more, provided that you follow proper maintenance and aftercare.
Our micro rings and mini micro rings can last up to five years or more if you take care of them. They are a little more high-maintenance but it is essential to follow the recommended aftercare advice if you want them to last for at least five years.
This aftercare comprises of two key parts:
- Regular in-salon maintenance appointments where we remove and refit your extensions.
- At-home aftercare.
We have a wide range of blogs to help you with aftercare and maintenance. Take a look through them to learn more about what is required to look after hair extensions and determine if you can commit to such maintenance.
Wedding Hairstyles with Hair Extensions
With hair extensions, the world is your oyster in terms of wedding hairstyles. From romantic flowing locks to glamorous updos, hair extensions are used to create volume and length, making it easier to achieve your desired hairstyle.
Can You Have an Updo with Hair Extensions?
What many people don’t realise is that hair extensions are great for updos. In fact, they make it easier for stylists to achieve your desired look as they have more hair and volume to work with.
Why not try a sleek high ponytail, half-up-half-down waves or a romantic bun. Alternatively, hair extensions are perfect for creating the length you need for beautifully textured braids.
Long, Luxurious Lengths
If you’ve been dreaming about long hair for your wedding day, but don’t want to commit to months of grow-out, hair extensions can give you the length and volume you seek in a matter of hours (not months!).
Why not consider long, romantic waves or a cool boho vibe? Or, show off your locks with mermaid vibes and curls for days.
