If you’re new to the world of hair extensions, you might have a lot of questions around how to look after them and get the most out of them. A question we hear a lot is whether or not you can put your hair up with extensions – some of you are concerned about damage, whilst others are worried about exposing the extensions.

So, can I put my hair up with micro ring extensions? Yes, you can 100% put your hair up with micro ring extensions. Extensions are great for creating length and volume, both of which are essential for a number of updos. In most cases, you can continue to style your hair as you did before extensions, as long as you follow your salon’s aftercare advice.

Read on to learn more about micro ring hair extensions and a few great styling options for when you want to wear your hair up.

Can I Tie My Hair Up With Micro Ring Extensions?

You can 100% put your hair up with micro ring hair extensions. In fact, micro rings are especially suitable for updos because of how discreet they are. Unlike other types of extensions, like clip-ins, they aren’t super visible. At The Hair Alchemist, we also colour match the rings to your hair to better hide them.

Most of the time, you can go about your life as before without damaging your micro ring extensions. Tie it up, wear it loose, do exercise, heat-style it, braid it, and create a fabulous updo. The world’s your oyster! Just be sure to take care of the extensions during the process.

Aftercare is super important, especially when using luxury Russian hair extensions – they’re an investment. Read our aftercare guide to learn how to properly look after your hair extensions and keep them looking amazing for longer.

Here are a few great, simple options for putting your hair up with extensions, whether you’re after a glamorous look or just want to get your hair off your face.

Glamorous Ponytail

If you love Ariana’s signature style you’re in luck – hair extensions are key for achieving this sleek look. They provide the length, volume and thickness that really makes the difference between being the girl next door and achieving a glamorous red carpet look.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Start with clean hair and prep with a smoothing product
  2. Blow dry the hair to make it smooth
  3. Section off the hair into relatively thin layers
  4. Straighten small pieces of hair, section by section, starting at the root and smoothly gliding to the ends
  5. Smooth the hair into a ponytail (however high you like!) and secure it with a hair elastic
  6. Take a small section of hair from under the ponytail and wrap it around the hair elastic. Secure this piece with bobby pins

How Do You Do an Updo with Micro Ring Extensions?

Updos with hair extensions are much easier than you might think. In fact, a lot of updos work much better with a bit of extra length and volume!

A high bun is a super simple updo to create using hair extensions. It works largely the same as creating the ponytail above, except you need to wrap the entire ponytail around the hair elastic and secure it in place with bobby pins. It’s up to you how sleek or messy to make your bun! Alternatively, scoop the hair to the base of the neck and create a chic low bun.

How about a half-up-half-down situation? This style is bang on trend right now and couldn’t be easier to do:

  1. Pull the front/top section of your hair into a messy bun on the top of your head and secure it with a hair elastic.
  2. Style the rest of your hair as desired. We think it looks great with beachy waves, though!

If you’re after a more formal, fancy updo, why not try incorporating braids and twists into your buns? They’re not actually as hard as they look but have a huge impact and always look super impressive!

How Do You Style Micro Ring Extensions?

Unless you’re just putting your hair up to get it out of your way whilst exercising or for a chill at-home day, part of creating a great ponytail or updo with micro ring extensions is first styling your hair.

Styling Hair Extensions

If you’re new to hair extensions, it might take a bit of time to learn how to handle longer, thicker hair but once you get to grips with it it should be very similar to styling your regular hair. But, be sure to take care of your extensions, though  – always use a heat protector and use appropriate heat when using styling tools (your stylist will be able to advise based on your specific extensions).

Beachy Waves and Curls

Beachy waves and curls are a staple for a lot of people that are relatively quick and simple to achieve. That doesn’t change with micro ring extensions – you might just have to adjust to a new length and more volume! However, depending on the length of your hair and how you curl it, you may need to invest in a new, longer barrel for your curling tool.

Big Blowout

A big blowout takes a bit more time and skill than simple curls and waves, but it has a huge impact! Whether you’re hitting the town or attending your wedding of the year, a big blowout is 100% worth the effort and hair extensions will only make it more fabulous. It can also be the building blocks to an amazing updo!

Styling for Volume

Hair extensions aren’t just for length! They’re also great for adding volume with a chic ponytail. Micro ring hair extensions are especially great for building volume, but unlike other types of hair extensions, they’re completely damage-free, more discreet and more comfortable. Miniature micro rings are a great option for those with thin hair looking to add volume.

When styling, aim to create a lift at the root. There are a number of ways you can do this but a few common tricks include:

  • Using products with volumising benefits (but not adding too much as this can weigh the hair down)
  • Blow dry your hair before continuing with straighteners or curlers
  • Blow dry your hair upside down – this creates ultimate volume!
  • Switch up your parting – hair naturally starts to lie flatter when parted the same way. Switching up your parting forces your hair to not lay so flat
  • Old-school hair rollers are great for creating big, voluminous curls
