What are Hair Extensions for Short Hair?
It’s a common misconception that you can’t get hair extensions if you have short hair. That is not the case. We offer a wide range of hair extension solutions to suit almost anyone, including those with short hair.
When it comes to hair extensions, the most important thing is that they look natural and blend seamlessly. When you have short hair, this can be a little more tricky. Your hair ideally needs to be long enough to hide the attachment (we typically recommend natural lengths of at least six inches/15 cm from the top).

Can you put hair extensions in really short hair?
No, you can’t put extensions in really short hair. This is because the hair extension needs some natural hair to attach to and long enough lengths to hide the attachment. Ideally, we ask for at least 6 inches / 15 cm of length to be able to attach extensions.

How do you add hair extensions to short hair?
When adding hair extensions to short hair, the method of attachment will differ by person. If you choose Clip-ins, the hair extensions can be applied easily at home. Simply clip them underneath your natural hair in layers. The natural hair should then fall on top of the clips in order to hide them.
If you choose to go for Micro rings, we will match the micro ring to the colour of your hair in order to make them more discreet. We may also choose to use our miniature micro rings if your hair is thin or extremely fine.
To attach micro rings, your hair is first sectioned before a small portion of hair the same thickness of the extension is divided off. This is threaded through the loop of the Micro ring extension before being clamped to secure the attachment. This is repeated across the head in small sections.
How do you blend extensions with a bob?
Many people are worried that if they have short hair, their extensions will not blend correctly. This is not the case. Our expert technicians apply hair extensions strategically to ensure a seamless blend. Your bespoke extensions will be expertly colour matched so there are no harsh lines or colour differences. We will then apply the extensions in rows at different areas of the scalp to make your new hair look as seamless as possible.
What type of extension is best for short hair?
We believe that Micro Rings or Mini Micro Rings are the best types of extensions for short hair as their attachment method allows for a more seamless blend with the natural hair. Some other types of extensions may result in a more blunt, less discrete finish.
They’re also the safest extensions to use if you’re trying to grow out your natural hair. Micro rings are the only truly safe, damage-free method of hair extensions attachment.
Can you add extensions to a pixie cut?
We can’t attach hair extensions to a pixie cut as it would be impossible to hide the extensions in the hair. We typically ask for at least 6 inches/15 cm of length to be able to attach extensions.
How short is too short for extensions?
At The Hair Alchemist, we typically ask for at least 6 inches/15 cm of length to be able to attach hair extensions. Anything shorter than this and we’d struggle to hide the attachment, resulting in a lower quality finish.

How long do hair extensions last on short hair?
Clip-in extensions are only temporary and aren’t recommended to be worn all the time. How long they last depends on how well they are looked after, and how often they’re used.
Regularly used extensions that aren’t well looked after may only last three to six months. However, we have some clients that have been wearing the same extensions for over two years!
Micro rings are one of the longest-lasting methods of hair extension attachment. If proper maintenance is carried out, they can last between 1 and 5 years. However, it’s important to note that you shouldn’t wear micro rings for longer than two months at a time. After two months, they will need to be removed and refitted.
