Micro rings and nano rings are two of the most popular types of hair extensions available on the market. Either of these are a great choice to add volume or length to your hair, but what’s the difference? In this article, our extension experts at The Hair Alchemist are going to discuss all the differences between micro rings and nano rings and what we believe is the best choice.

So, what’s the difference between micro rings and nano rings? Micro rings and nano rings share a lot of similarities in the sense that they are both virtually identical when it comes to their fitting method. However, the biggest difference is their size. Both are suitable for a number of different hair types, but miniature micro rings, another type of hair extensions, will work particularly well for those with thin hair.

Read on to find out more about the difference between micro rings and nano rings and which one is the right extension choice for your hair.

What Is The Difference Between Micro Rings And Nano Rings?

Choosing the right hair extensions can be a difficult decision. There are so many to choose from, but how do you know which is suitable for your hair? Although micro rings and nano rings may seem similar due to their look, they are very different in their purpose. We’re going to outline the differences and similarities between the two and give you the knowledge to make an informed decision about which may be better for you and your hair.

Hair Type

Thinking about our hair type is important when making a decision about which hair extensions to purchase. For example, those with thinner hair will need to take into account the bulkiness and weight of their extensions, in order to avoid further damage. Nano rings are a perfect choice for thin hair because they are much smaller and much more discreet. Your final result will be very natural, especially if you take care in matching hair texture. Thicker hair may be better at concealing attachment methods and is a bit more robust when it comes to weight.

Keeping your extensions lightweight is still important though. Extensions that are too heavy for your hair type will put strain on your roots and may lead to damage or breakage, especially on thin hair. You’ll also need to think about hair health and, with both micro and nano rings, adhesives or bonds aren’t used, so are much better in the long run.

Fitting Method

The main similarity between micro rings and nano rings is their fitting method. Both types of hair extensions are applied by taking a small section of your natural hair and threading it through a ring, either nano or micro. The ring is then clamped shut in order to secure the extension in the right place. To protect the hair and prevent slippage, the metal ring is lined with a fine silicone layer. The fitting method does not involve any glue or chemicals so there is no damage done to your natural hair.

Rings

The major difference between the two types of extensions is the size of the rings. Nano ring hair extensions are almost 90% smaller than micro rings, which makes them ideal for thinner hair as they are more discreet. Nano rings are so small that they are virtually invisible in any type of hair, whereas micro rings are only suitable for medium to thicker hair.

Maintenance and Aftercare

Typically, after 6 to 8 weeks, both types would need to be repositioned during a maintenance appointment. Each extension will be individually removed, resealed with a keratin bonding to prevent shedding, and reapplied. During the appointment, we will wash and trim your hair and check the health of your scalp.

The aftercare procedure for both nano and micro ring hair extensions is exactly the same, this includes:

  • Not going to bed with wet extensions
  • Brushing your extensions from root to tip both in the morning and at night
  • Sleeping in either a bun or a loose plait
  • Investing in proper hair care products

At The Hair Alchemist, we offer both maintenance and aftercare expertise and knowledge for all our clients in order to keep your hair looking as healthy and fabulous for as long as possible.

Which Is Better; Micro Rings Or Nano Rings?

There is no definitive answer to this question. Both are excellent forms of extensions that are suited to different purposes. A nano ring, for example, would be a better choice for someone who has thinner hair, as they are a lot smaller and are ultimately more discreet.

At The Hair Alchemist, we go one step further and offer an amazing alternative with our specially designed miniature micro rings. These extensions will look almost entirely undetectable, even in extremely fine hair. Lasting between one to five years with the proper maintenance and aftercare, our miniature micro ring extensions are made for clients that have been turned away or left dissatisfied by other salons.

Both hold equal value for how they can add volume and thickness to your natural hair but when looking at which one is ‘better’ for you, it may be worth consulting an experienced technician, who will be able to provide you with the best solution.

At The Hair Alchemist, our hair extension technicians have the expertise and knowledge to determine what extension will fit you best. To find out more about how we can help you, come for a free consultation with one of our team members.
