Micro rings have been around for quite some time and continue to be one of the most popular forms of hair extensions. They are popular because they do not require heated glue bonding and are less likely to damage your natural hair.

But how frequently should they be washed? You should wash your micro ring hair extensions 1-2 times per week, unless you have excessive build-up or have been in hot environments. In this case, 3 times per week is the maximum. Anything more than three times a week can cause damage to the bonds.

How Often Should You Wash Micro Ring Hair Extensions?

You should wash your micro ring extensions 1-2 times a week. Washing your hair extensions is an absolute necessity and should not be avoided. You must wash them for the same reasons you would wash your own hair – so they don’t smell or become unclean.

However, excessive washing can cause damage to the extensions and should be confined to no more than three times per week.

How to Wash Micro Ring Hair Extensions

Having trouble figuring out how to wash your micro ring hair extensions without damaging them? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a step-by-step guide to washing your extensions correctly.

1. Detangle Your Hair Whilst it is Still Dry

Detangle the extensions while they are still dry, starting at the ends and working your way up to the micro ring. Tease any knots gently without pulling on the extensions.

2. Massage Shampoo into Your Scalp

Massage shampoo into your scalp as normal, but more gently. Be very careful not to scrub vigorously near the bonds as this can cause them to loosen. We also find that it’s best to wash your hair upright (as opposed to over the bath, for example) as this reduces the chance of tangling.

3. Smooth the Shampoo into your Extensions

Smooth the shampoo that’s already on your scalp down the length of your natural hair and then through the micro hair extensions. To spread the shampoo, it’s best to use a shower comb or your fingertips. Avoid stroking the hair in circular motions as this can cause tangling.

4. Rinse your hair with lukewarm water

Rinse your hair using lukewarm water. Take hold of all of the hair and gently squeeze starting at the top and working your way down to the ends.

5. Carefully dry your hair

After washing your micro ring hair extensions, you must dry them as well as your own hair. You can either towel dry or blow dry your hair extensions, but you must be cautious in both cases.

When blow drying, choose a moderate heat setting since high heat can harm human hair and heat up the micro rings. Towel dry your scalp and compress the hair extensions with a towel, rather than massaging the hair since this can promote tangling.

Top Tips for Healthy Hair Extensions

Now that you know how to properly wash your hair extensions, check out these 5 top tips for keeping them looking healthy and fresh on a daily basis.

1. Detangle Each Morning

Before you do anything, ensure you detangle your extensions each morning. If you do not untangle your extensions when you first notice them, they will continue to get worse and may cause matting over time.

2. Wash 2X per Week for Optimal Scalp Health

Excessive washing might cause harm to your micro ring hair extensions. Therefore, washing your extensions twice a week is the ideal schedule to keep your hair clean while not causing damage to your extensions.

3. Invest in a Brush Specifically for Extensions

Brushing your hair extensions is a crucial component of your daily hair care routine. As such,  investing in a hair extension brush will maintain the health and lifespan of your hair extensions.

4. Brush Your Hair 3 Times a Day

You should brush your hair 2-3 times a day when you have extensions. This includes once in the morning, before bed, and sometime in-between. Always brush your hair prior to washing, and ensure you never brush your extensions when they are wet. Since both your natural hair and your hair extensions are fragile when wet, it is best to blow dry your extensions before brushing them.

5. Oil Your Extensions Each Night

Each night before bed, use Argan/Moroccan oil to your extensions to avoid dryness and split ends. This will ensure that your extensions keep that glowing look to them and remain healthy. Ensure that you choose a lightweight oil to use as you do not want to get excess product in your extensions. Likewise, avoid oiling near the rings as this can cause slippage.
